Magician by BillCorbett Magician by BillCorbett
When I was painting this Fantasy scene I couldn't help thinking about the Raymond E Feist book by the same name. I think I might have to read it again :)

This is bigger than my usual landscapes so I will have to make it into a new wallpaper at some point.

enjoy!

Love it... (I think Geoff Taylor would have been proud to have done this). The lighting and shadows around the trees definately stand out for me.

Great work!

I really like the eye on the details (the cracks in the trees, details on the rocks, etc.)

Yeah, this is just the perfect vibe! i'm totally feeling the scene, it really gives me the feeling this is Pug, further into the storyline, when he's this lone wolf.

For some reason this reminds me of those awesome pixel art painted backgrounds oldschool games used to have. Kyrandia and such...Good job! :)

I remember it well :) It's probably because of the colours I used, I remember the pixel art of that time was highly saturated and quite enchanting. Thanks for the lovely compliment and thanks for the faves and watch

Goodness, those colors are just amazing. I love the very thin wisps of cloud, and that castle's architecture is amazing and detailed, even at a distance. I love all the fine details in this, I could look at this forever.

Thanks George, I'm glad you like my palette and composition :) I did the whole thing from my head so I guess a lot of things don't come of as being realistic, but I kinda like that kind of fantasy :) Have you forgiven me for knowing who Jim Lee was?

Realism is overrated and can limit one's imagination I find, so I'm glad this is all out of your head.

Also, all is forgiven :headbang:

Firstly: You capture the mood of high fantasy very well in this picture. The coloring is good, as well as the composition.

However, the devil is in the details, as they say, and there are two points in the picture that sets it apart from being great:

One: The city in the background has high buildings with single rows of windows, and the main gate has similar windows. The houses look extremely out of place, and you would not be able to see any windows or arrowslits in the wall at this distance.
Two: The mountain range in the background looks a bit repetitive, you might want to add some variation to the shape and height.

However, these details are just that. You have the inspiration for great genrework if you keep it up.

Well I actually agree with you on both points, so taking that on board I change the background range a little and halfed the window sizes in the city. Thanks for your honesty.

If you don't mind a bit of a critique, it looks from the trees like the prevailing winds are out of the left, but his cloak is blowing like the wind is out of the right. While this certainly does happen in the mountains, particularly around sunrise/sunset, it immediately struck me as odd.

Also, there's something very odd about the physics of his cloak. I'm not quite sure how to explain what's wrong, though.

I don't mind a bit of critique. Unfortunately these things happen when I don't use references, but I guess for doing something entirely from my head I'm reasonably pleased overall. I'll take another look at that cloak sometime though.

Oh, I love the image in general. I guess I forgot to say that . I adore the way you use color, especially. The foreground rocks are just gorgeous.

I think the thing with the cloak is the way fabric behaves when blown... I think the edges would tend to flap up more than they're doing, and the center less. Either that or it would billow like a sail. My cloak always flapped: first it would billow, then the middle would collapse downward and the edges would flap up, then repeat.

:) Thanks, I reviewed the cloak and realised that the part that was covering the arm looked wrong and so I corrected it and a couple of other points. It's still not there but I might visit it again at some point :) It's good that you notice as it helps me iron out the little problems.
